Women shaping Northern California Wine

Suzanne Jahnke – Vineyard and Winery Owner of Rivino Estate Winery
Women are driving meaningful change in Northern California wine, even though they remain underrepresented in ownership. Did you know women make up nearly 60% of U.S. wine consumers, yet female ownership in the wine industry remains notably small? In Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake Counties, women are estimated to represent fewer than 10% of vineyard and winery owners, a number that reflects statewide patterns. And still, the women who are leading vineyards and wineries across Northern California are doing so with remarkable vision, grit, and grace. Their presence is reshaping the region in ways that are both powerful and deeply inspiring.
Introducing a Series: Stories of Leadership
This piece marks the first in a continuing series highlighting the women whose leadership, creativity, and stewardship are defining the future of Northern California wine. Each story stands on its own, yet together they reveal a vibrant, determined community of women who are expanding what’s possible in the vineyard and beyond.
Spotlight: Suzanne Jahnke of Rivino Estate Winery
A vineyard and winery owner wears many hats—from tending vines and stewarding the land to guiding production, shaping a brand, and creating a welcoming experience for guests.
One of the region’s standout women in the wine industry is Suzanne Jahnke of Rivino Estate Winery. Owner and operator since 2008, she farms 250 acres along the banks of the Russian River in Mendocino County and produces small‑lot wines entirely from estate-grown fruit. Rivino’s portfolio reflects both classic varietals and adventurous blends.
"When you farm for a living, you learn quickly that the land sets the pace. My job is to honor that rhythm and make choices that keep this place thriving long after me." Suzanne Jahnke
