At the far northern edge of Mendocino County, winemaker David Bergin and farmers John and Marbry Sipila have spent more than four decades living sustainably, tending their small vineyards in Piercy and Bell Springs and growing Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, and Zinfandel through organic gardening and permaculture. In these remote, rugged hills, their off‑grid, solar‑powered winery—forest‑cooled, wood‑heated, and rooted in closed‑loop farming—crafts native‑yeast, organically grown wines aged in fine oak and bottled without filtration, offering pure, unvarnished expressions of this singular landscape.
In the remote and rugged hills where the winery is located, it completely off-the-grid, solar-powered, wood-heated and forest-cooled. All waste products are simply composted and returned to the vineyards, offering a model of sustainability.
All of their fruit is organically grown, and the wines are fermented without added sulfites, on their own native yeasts. Aged for up to two years in the finest French and American oak, and bottled without filtration, they are pure expressions of their unique terroir.
Shown here is special feature on the vineyard property: A pond that stores only rainwater. Typically, ponds in vineyards get filled from deep wells, which require electricity and expensive pumping systems. This option is more eco friendly.
